Germany star Thomas Müller scored in his 710th Bundesliga match to help Bayern Munich beat Freiburg 2-0.
Müller replaced new signing Michael Olise in the 59th minute of Sunday’s match, breaking a tie with the great goalkeeper Sepp Maier, who made 709 appearances in all competitions during his Bayern career.
Müller scored in the 78th minute when he controlled Gnabry’s cross with one touch, took the ball away from Freiburg’s Maximilian Eggestein and then used his second touch to fire past Florian Müller.
“To be honest, the record is not that important to me, the important thing is that I scored a really beautiful goal,” Müller told DAZN. “The great technique and also being able to get there, that’s the fun thing for me.”
It was Muller’s 150th Bundesliga goal, making it 16 consecutive seasons in Germany’s top flight since 2009-10.
The 34-year-old made his 474th Bundesliga appearance for Bayern last week, setting a club record for the second time in as many games. It also broke a tie with Meyer.
Earlier, Harry Kane won the penalty and scored his first Bundesliga goal of the season when he turned the ball into the outstretched arm of Freiburg defender Max Rosenfeld from the spot. It helped Bayern take the lead.
Rosenfeld appeared to raise his arm to steady himself as Kane grabbed his other shoulder and jumped. The referee did not award a penalty on the pitch, but instead awarded it after watching a replay.
In stoppage time, Bayern new signing Joao Palhinha was awarded a penalty for handling the ball, but Freiburg’s Lucas Hoeller’s shot went over the bar. That ensured Bayern kept a clean sheet in Vincent Kompany’s first home game as coach.
On Sunday, another Bayern player scored: Paul Fahner, on loan from Bayern, converted a penalty for Heidenheim in a 4-0 win.
In the ninth minute, the Augsburg defender handled the ball and the 18-year-old Fahner converted the spot-kick. Leo Senza made it 2-0 in the 30th minute, with goals from Adrian Beck and Maximilian Breunig in the second half.
Heidenheim have won all five of their games this season in all competitions. It is their second season in the Bundesliga and their first continental competition since qualifying for the Europa League, where they will face Chelsea.
