The football calendar is looking busier and more intense than ever, with more games than ever at club and international level, and given the way stoppage time is now calculated, games are getting a little longer too.
It is clear that Rodri is not happy with the situation and has now publicly stated that he believes he and others may be ready to strike amid their busy schedule.
City have a large squad and are therefore well placed to handle a lot of games over the years, but overall it is easy to see why many players feel that this cannot continue.
Footballers are well paid, but it is also important to consider their health and not risk more serious injuries due to fatigue.
It is also worth noting that the quality of football matches will not be the same if players are tired, so football’s governing bodies would do well to consider whether playing so many games will actually benefit the quality of their product.
Rodri hints at player strike
Asked if he thought the players could go on strike, Rodri told a press conference: “Yes, I think we are close.”
“It’s easy to understand. In general, if you ask any player, they will tell you the same thing. It’s not just Rodri’s opinion or anyone else’s.
I think it’s a general opinion among the players and if it continues like this, then there will come a time when we will have no other choice.”
“Let’s see. I don’t know what will happen, but we are worried because we are the ones suffering.
