In the latest print edition, the Sunday Mirror (page 68) claims that West Ham United are interested in signing Joel Matip. The Hammers are reportedly considering signing the Cameroonian centre-back on a free transfer.
Matip’s latest appearances for Liverpool
Matip has endured an injury-plagued season at the Merseyside club but has become an important player for the Reds. The Cameroon international made just 14 appearances for the Reds last season but failed to score in all competitions.
The 33-year-old has established himself as a reliable defensive player, averaging 1.2 tackles, 0.9 interceptions and 4.1 clearances per 90 minutes in the Premier League. He has a passing accuracy of 87.7% in the Premier League (data from whoscored) and his distribution of the ball is very accurate.
Matip is currently a free agent, making him an affordable option for the Hammers this month.
Should West Ham boss Lopetegui sign Matip?
Matip is a reliable defender who reads danger well to win the ball back for his team in defence. He often neutralises danger when his opponents attack and can use his powerful 1.95m frame to win aerial duels.
Matip, 33, is entering the latter stages of his career, so he will only be able to solve West Ham’s defensive problems in the short term. However, the Hammers would be well advised to bring him into the squad as soon as possible as he will undoubtedly improve the quality of Lopetegui’s backline.
Matip has a wealth of experience at the highest level and could be a real asset for West Ham in this season’s fixtures. Therefore, the east London club should focus on signing the Cameroonian centre-back on a free transfer this month.
At the very least, Matip could help the Hammers challenge on all fronts in the short term. However, he is a player in decline, making him a risky option for Lopetegui to consider this summer.
